Many people travel far and wide to enrich their knowledge of the destination they are travelling to. We have recently introduced some “immersive” activities locally which enable guests to dip into the way of life locally in and around Gioiosa Marea and these have proved very popular.
These activities not only provide some valuable small revenue for the local people but also give guests a unique opportunity to get close to the lifestyle of Sicilians who are amongst the most hospitable of folk.
Piraino Experience - €25
The local historic hill town of Piraino is just 30 minutes’ drive from Gioiosa Marea and is one of those hidden gems that one wouldn’t normally get to see. In fact, we have organised a half day experience that is exclusive to guests at Casa Piccolo Paradiso. The experience starts with a Sicilian breakfast at the only bar in Piraino which has stunning views out across the coast and Nebrodi mountains. This is followed by a tour of the historic village, its most important churches, a visit into the private catacombs, a visit onto the roof of the Torre Saracena then off to a private residence to eat Pane Cunzatu (warm home baked bread with tomatoes and anchovies) and drink local wine.
Bread Making (Casereccio) - €7
In the local village of San Leonardo, Filipo makes bread (casereccio) for the local people in his wood burning oven located in the family back yard. We have arranged a bread making (alla siciliano) experience where participants will join Filipo for an hour or so and learn how he makes his wonderful bread. Guests will return in the afternoon (once the bread has had time to rise) and bake their loaves ready for an evening feast with local salami, cheese, etc.
Sicilian Dinner - €25
Pina, the wife of Filipo (the bread maker) is an excellent cook and prepares the most delicious Sicilian meal. As well as a host of antipasti, Pina makes some delicious local macaroni that makes our mouths water just writing about them! We have arranged a morning at Pina’s home where participants will watch and assist in the preparation of some of these lovely dishes. Guests will return in the evening to enjoy a Sicilian feast including the dishes prepared earlier all washed down with Filipo’s home made wine!
Aeolian Adventure – €115pp (2), €90pp (4), €70pp (6)
For those who have a slight spirit of adventure, Casa Piccolo Paradiso offers a private escorted day-tour of Volcano and Lipari on a private Gomone. We leave around 09.00hrs in the morning and board the craft on the nearby beach in Gioiosa Marea and spend the day touring the two islands stopping for regular swims in the crystal clear waters, a coffee on Volcano and lunch on Lipari. We return to the mainland shore around 17.30hrs. Prices differ according to participants which will also determine the boat size.
